Nutrition and Nutrients

A root cause to mental and physical health struggles

You’re driving along and the car starts to sputter. You realize that you are low on gas. Panic occurs as you see a gas station, but don’t know if you can make it. As you are about to pull in, the car dies. UGH.

You get out and push the car to the pump. Out of frustration with the situation, you hit the diesel instead of unleaded button. Car is filled, and you jump in to get going – but a whole new set of problems occurs.

This scenario is similar to what happens when the body doesn’t get the nutrients or nutrition it needs.

The body starts to sputter as the brain starts to get foggy, energy starts to dissipate, anxiety or depression start to sink in.

Then physical ailments start to occur, and life starts to get worse because the wrong fuel was put in the car.

The wrong fuel might be too much food, alcohol, toxins, wrong balance of nutrition, etc. No matter what the cause is, the body feels lousy!!! All because the right fuel wasn’t being put in the car.

Nutrition, nutrients, and mental health? Really???

Come on, it’s just a mood. How is there a connection?

This is a common thought process. The truth is, there REALLY is a HUGE connection.

Mood is based on chemical signals in the body, and these chemical signals cannot happen unless proper nutrition and nutrients occur. It’s like gas in your car. If you don’t have gas, your car can’t run. The body is the same way whether mood related or physical health issues.

High-level overview of what the body needs

There are many main components the body needs to positively influence mental health. The body needs your basic fuel of multivitamins and minerals. The body then needs to have a good multivitamin; Vitamin D, methylated B complex, and Omega 3’s are the basics. Magnesium and calcium are also very important.

When it comes to nutrition, we need protein, carbohydrates, and fats. They all play a vital role in both our physical and mental health.

One example is with protein. Did you know protein contains amino acids which are the precursors to neurotransmitter function? AND did you know that proper neurotransmitter function is needed for us to maintain a balanced mood?
